Hyperlocal Publisher Shout Out: Happenings Media

This week, we send a shout-out to our friends at Happenings Media, publishers of ‘digital hyperlocal lifestyle magazines’ in more than 20 communities – and counting! Co-founder Angela Giovine was kind enough to take a moment and answer some questions for us about what they’ve learned along the way …
Q1: What has been one of your proudest moments/breakout successes with your site?
Last year, we held our first ever Happening List competition, a people’s choice voting contest which has now expanded into several of our Happening magazines. Watching that contest go viral and subsequently hosting a sold-out 350 person red carpet event to honor the winners was an amazing experience. Seeing that contest continue to grow and the success being replicated by our licensees is even more rewarding.
Q2: What have you found to be your greatest challenge, and how do you overcome it (if at all?)
One of the most exciting aspects of running Happenings Media is also the most challenging- the scope of possibilities. The hyperlocal digital media space is very green and quickly evolving; we sometimes refer to it as the “Wild West”. In order to stay at the top of our game, we’re constantly educating ourselves, examining the business, and adjusting as necessary. One of our biggest assets has been our ability to stay lean and adapt.
Q3: If you could do it all over again with the knowledge you have today, what would you do differently?
We’re big believers in learning through experience so I don’t think we’d change anything. Perhaps we would have just started Happenings Media earlier!
Q4: Do you have any advice or tips you would like to share with fellow hyperlocal online publishers?
Keep your fingers on the pulse of the LOCAL communities! No amount of research, algorithms, or technology can replace the first-hand knowledge you’ll gain from actually interacting with local communities at the ground level.
