Publisher Shout Out: Corner Media
by: Reilly O'Connor, on Sep 4, 2014 in Publisher Shout Outs
This week we are featuring Corner Media, a network of seven Brooklyn-based neighborhood news sites. We had the opportunity to get the inside scoop on the network from its very own Publisher, Liena Zagare. Liena, who formerly worked for Patch and briefly for the Huffington Post, found her passion in community news and strives to bring neighbors news they care about. Here’s what she had to say:
Q. What has been one of your proudest moments/breakout successes with your sites?
A. This year has been full of great moments – doubling in size, acquiring more established neighborhood sites (Sheepshead Bites, Bensonhurst Bean) and getting incredible feedback from both readers and advertisers about the value we bring to the neighborhoods we serve. It has been very rewarding.
Q. What has been your biggest challenge?
A. Finding enough time in the day to build the business side. When you start on a shoestring budget doing everything yourself, it can be overwhelming – edit, tech, marketing, sales, staff, accounting … you name it. Figuring out what to delegate, what to outsource, and how to streamline, has been a learning experience.
Q. How did/do you address this challenge/what has happened as a result?
A. I’ve read a shelf full of books about how to run effective organizations, and how to sell a product you really believe in. They’ve helped a lot. The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes is by far my favorite. But there has been a lot of learning by trial and error as well.
Q. If you could do it all over again with the knowledge you have today, what would you do differently? And why?
A. In hyperlocal, there is a definite ramp up period on the editorial side while you build readership and the kind of penetration/reach of your target area that allows ads to be sold. The tendency is to focus on edit in this period, though with hindsight I’d say the time and resources need to be split evenly so when you start selling, you can do it well.
